Team Coaching

Team coaching

Jo recently facilitated a team session with us so that we could work closer and better as a team and to really challenge any team elements that weren’t working. The session was great, it enabled us to get to the root problem of what wasn’t working and to create a cohesive plan of how to integrate small changes into the team to fix some of the problems, and also to celebrate what is going well. The honesty and input was highly appreciated by all. I highly recommend Jo and found the session invaluable

I have worked with Phoenix over the last 2 years on 3 separate occasions with 3 very different briefs: Team & Business facilitation; Event Facilitation and Team Development.

They have consistently exceeded expectations helping to shape the brief, challenge the individuals involved in a productive manner and provided a constructive and effective environment that delivered the desired results. They are also a pleasure to work with! I would recommend them for any type of event design and facilitation that you need to do.

As such, it was never going to be a straight forward session to run.

There are clear actions that have come from the day and I believe the partnership is in a far better position as a result.

I hired Jo to facilitate a three day retreat for our team focused on team and trust building.

In the run up to the retreat, I found Jo efficient and responsive in her design of the agenda and enjoyed working with her to ensure it was relevant for all participants. Over the course of the three days, Jo demonstrated expert facilitation skills, adapting quickly to the needs of the group (and some adverse weather conditions).

Since the retreat, I have already seen the team using the frameworks and tools shared by Jo as well as actively considering theirs and others’ working styles. I would definitely recommend Jo.

Team coaching and capability development

I invited Jo to support my efforts to improve my team’s ways of working as part of our transformation journey into a high performing team. one. Jo came in initially and explored what the end outcome would look like. She processed this information into a program which met my needs and was endorsed by the team. Working with Jo has been great as she’s taken a coaching style to draw out the best in all of us through out the program. She’s provided some stretch tasks and have the ability to help you develop your own solutions rather than text book type ones. Jo took a holistic approach to addressing our needs and was flexible with the plan – really ensuring in was customized to address our concerns. Jo is great facilitator, coach and trainer all packaged in one.

Team coaching - Senior management team

Save the Children UK’s Global Programmes Management Team (responsible for £300m of annual programming) spent six months working closely with Phoenix to improve our team working, communications and mutual accountability. We benefited greatly from having two well matched facilitators who took us through a structured but flexible journey of self-analysis, trust and risk taking.  The positive feedback from the wider senior leadership team is testament to the distance we have travelled and the strengthened relationships we have to go even further.  Many thanks Phoenix!

Senior Leadership team development

britvic logoPhoenix helped us translate a number of areas we wanted to explore as a senior team, into a focused agenda.  They helped create and shape an agenda that gave us the time and space to focus on us as a team, to have open and honest discussions about key topics, and provide creative solutions and activities to help move us forward as a team as part of a 2 day team development session.  This led to us having a series of open, honest and engaging conversations where we collectively reached alignment on a number of things which we solved / resolved in the team development session, or gave us the space and stimulus to move things forward back in the office environment.

For our size of group, we really benefited from having 2 facilitators, both of which brought different things to the group dynamic.  Having independent facilitators also meant they could push us where they felt we were holding back, and offer suggestions from their breadth of experiences.

We found the session hugely beneficial and would highly recommend Jo and her colleagues.

UnLtd is the foundation for social entrepreneurs, finding and supporting the best talent in the UK to tackle the most pressing social challenges in the country and doing so in ways which are sustainable and impactful. We are a highly ambitious organisation, innovating new models, and building an ecosystem of support capable of tapping the full potential of social entrepreneurs.

Our top team has worked brilliantly on their individual functions. But we wanted to go further, with fluid teamwork, bringing all the skills and styles to bear on the whole of our mission.

Jo and Isabel from Phoenix Training and Coaching had an immediate grasp of our challenge, asking the acute questions which got to the heart of our starting point and goals. Their session design rapidly built from the fundamentals of personal communication styles, to trust building, and on to using specific, real projects to identify the behaviours and approaches that would work for us.

Many team development approaches feel great on the day but rapidly lose impact afterwards. Phoenix were different – they changed our “normal”. They left us with commitments, tools and gut level understanding to make our team truly high performing. If you want real, lasting results, I thoroughly recommend them.

One to One Coaching

One to one coaching - Professional ballet dancer

Jo has a warmth, generosity and sense of understanding that made me feel immediately supported and safe. She helped me through an uncomfortable career transition by gently challenging my perspectives, helping me override my anxiety with inspiration. Many of her wise words still resonate with me now, a year later. Thank you Jo, for all you’ve done for me!

Dreda BlowLeeds/Canada
One to one coaching - Independent dance artist

Over the years as a creative practitioner, I have always been told “I work too much” and encouraged to, “find a work/life balance”.  I have a busy job and although there are parts I prefer not to have to do, I actually love being busy – it is part of who I am, I thrive on challenge and deadlines.  One of my downfalls has been putting other peoples’ needs before my own and before you know it, you are sorting everyone else’s lives when your own involves juggling 8 different roles.

I had not experienced coaching before and was lucky to have support from the Dancers Career Development team to work with Jo for 3 sessions.  First of all, Jo listened and understood how I function, knowing that telling me to stop, slow down or simply just say no, would not work.

Asking questions, Jo helped me create a more manageable vision of an ideal working schedule and helped me understand how to value my time.  She allowed me to consider important questions and find my own answers, guiding me through a variety of strategies to change the elements in my life and work that were unproductive.

Jo is a very kind, considerate and funny lady.  I loved going to my sessions as not only would I learn and make small but, in hindsight, very important decisions but it was fun!  My time there was well spent indeed and has helped me create a better sense of self value, of self and work management.  Because of this I am actually more creative, more productive yet feel I have more time and am as a result more relaxed in various aspects of my life.

I would highly recommend Jo to anyone hoping to change something in life, what ever it is.  There is no pressure, she helps you want to make the changes as you figure out what was perhaps stopping you in the first place.  Jo brings great guidance, successful strategies to grow in your own time and in your own ways (you make the decisions all the way).  She is full of empathy yet has a fabulous sense of humour and lots of positive encouragement.

Stepping up to senior leadership

Context:  Client wanted to step up to a new Leadership role and become fully part of the Senior Management Team, be valued as such and to find her own authentic leadership style. We had just 4 sessions to do this!

What did you most value about the coaching?:  Jo drew ideas and solutions from me most skillfully. She kept my focus to the tasks we were exploring together. She gave me confidence in lots of different ways. She had a warm and friendly approach but was direct and clear with me throughout.

What’s the most useful thing your learned about yourself as part of the coaching? That I can manage change and cope when it feels very uncomfortable. That I do have the resources within me to address very challenging situations. That I do have the capacity to be the leader I would like to be and that I can maintain my own personal integrity whilst holding a senior role.

What difference has or will this coaching make to your life? The coaching has already made a significant difference to my life. I feel very much a valued part of the Senior Management Team and I feel that my attitude to my role within that team has altered significantly. My career has and will benefit tremendously from my coaching with Jo.

Other comments:  Thank you for such a supportive and engaging experience. You really challenged me and I am so delighted that I met both yours and my expectations of myself.

One to one coaching - Northern Ballet dancer & DCD Ambassador

I approached Jo through the DCD* coaching service and when I had my first session with her I wasn’t sure what to expect. I just knew I felt a little lost and was hoping to understand myself a little better. The moment I started speaking to Jo I knew she was there one hundred percent, she was listening to me and I felt like I could open up and talk as much as I needed to and she wouldn’t have judged me or thought what I was saying was irrelevant. She didn’t suggest what I should do to make myself feel better instead she asked me questions and the answer to those questions led me to understand what was making me feel a certain way and what I needed to do to get myself out of this time of confusion.

After my second session with Jo I felt empowered that I had the skills to do what I wanted, she gave me tools to recognise my triggers and make sure I would act in a mindful manner.
Apart from being a wonderful coach, Jo is an incredible person her smile is calming and her words always kind. I will keep going to Jo for my personal development because she’s genuinely helped me turn my life around.

Before going to Jo, I wasn’t too sure of what to expect of coaching. Her sessions have helped me tackle challenges without feeling overwhelmed and were delivered with compassion, humour and understanding, all while giving me tools to use, many that I already had but just hadn’t tapped into. Jo has a great way of allowing space to think and explore and I always leave our time together feeling supported and empowered.

One to one coaching - Manchester professional independent dancer

I travelled to Leeds from Greater Manchester over one year for three DCD* coaching sessions with Jo. The opportunity of these sessions came as I was recovering from what was a life changing injury and beginning to care more for my Dad who has Alzheimer’s. I remember enjoying making my way, firstly with a walking stick to sessions that gave me the opportunity to reflect positively on my situation. I could talk through the challenging experience of being a dancer who had to stop, suddenly a busy working life in dance and health and whose growing responsibilities meant that a rethink about this was needed. As my injury took its time to heal, this transition also took its time and during that I had the opportunity to discover new interests. Jo actively supported me in this which was a huge thing for someone who has worked for over twenty five years in dance and whose body and self belief had taken a knock.

I’m now teacher training in Mindfulness for Health. I run an informal Mindfulness Group and creative activities outdoors in my local area. I work as a movement and visual artist and am finding my dancing body again. All this I plan carefully around my caring role.

Thank you Jo, in a stormy time you helped set me off on a new exciting journey.

I was one of the first dancers at the new NHS dance injury clinic in London in 2012 with an injury which unfortunately worsened with complications, although symptoms eased after my year of treatment with the clinic, with the hope of performing again, it was not to be so with extra medical complications occurring later that year. I met Jo at a DCD Evolve event at Scottish Ballet in 2017 and went on to receive coaching from her at Northern Ballet.  After one session I had, through her facilitation, turned around my perceived wasted years into consolidated learning and applied to do my masters degree in occupational therapy with a view to engage others in achieving what they are able to through healthcare education despite their disabilities.

Jo is an expert at facilitating change in perception of “inability” to “ability” and “can’t do” to “will do.” By the second session, I had actioned the confidence, problem-solving skills and positive thinking Jo had instigated in me through the previous session and am currently well on my way to my new career, supported by DCD.

Coaching with Jo was an indispensable part in this, providing the final push to achieve my transition by providing the none judgemental active listening and providing me with the reflective ability to recognise and action the skills I did not realise I had. Working with Jo took away the final barrier of fear to allow my next move in life and I recommend her for any coaching needs you may have.

I thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to my meetings with Jo she made me feel at ease, gave me confidence when I really needed it and brought clarity and order to my chaotic regime and life.  On reflection the sessions were stretched over a massive developmental period of my life therefore I grew in experience which has taught me about prioritising my administrative duties, recognise my own strengths and delegate to others who are more suited to that role. Overall I have learnt to create awareness and take action to finding balance in my work and family life.  Thank you.

Facilitation

Facilitating a session on organisational values

Jo has an extraordinary talent for getting to the heart of an organisation.  We approached Jo to facilitate an organisational values workshop with very limited advance notice and within a tight time frame.

Her approach was clear, pragmatic and impactful. The workshop facilitation was dynamic, fast-paced and respectful of individual voices whilst remaining on track and outcome focused.

As an organisation we continue to build on the foundations that Jo helped draw from us and look forward to working with her again when the need arises.

Board strategy facilitation

We’ve worked with Jo a number of times at innocent, inviting her to facilitate our strategy discussions at Board sessions as well as workshops creating our Packaging strategy. Jo takes time to understand the brief, then quickly develops a plan to deliver the outcomes in the time available, aligning key stakeholders on the way. She ‘gets it’ due to her business background, and marries this with her understanding of team dynamics to create workshops that work and deliver the desired outcomes. In facilitation, she brings energy, focus, challenge and appropriate humour to ensure the group is kept on track, yet is flexible if needed to accommodate the needs of the group. She’s skilful at ensuring everyone is heard, and managing the dynamics of a high performing board team. I’d recommend her for similar work any time

Embedding values into the heart of our organisation

Jo has just completed a piece to work to support UnLtd in embedding their Values in into the heart of the organisation.

Jo’s approach was thoughtful and measured. She listens to the client brief then develops a proposal that delivers your objectives using your brief but her expertise, tested framework and her vast experience. The result is more than you thought you could achieve. At the same time, Jo is thoughtful about budgets, time and resource and never pushes the client beyond their capacity or resource.

The benefit of working with Jo for several projects is that she gets to know your organisation and they get to know how she works. This makes for enhanced outputs from any workshops or training Jo is facilitating.
I’d recommend using Jo not only for one off projects, but let her get to know your organisation and you will reap the benefits.

Management Development Programme

I asked Jo to deliver a management training to my team at Movember as most of them had never had any formal training on people management.

She developed a program that could adapt to actual managers as well as those who didn’t have direct line management responsibilities. This was incredibly helpful for all of them to understand the fundamental notions of people management (setting objectives, conducting 121s, coaching and delivering feedback, delegating efficiently…) and I’ve seen a real impact in the way they work together and deliver/accept constructive feedback. They are all really enthusiastic about what they have learned, how helpful it was and the way it was delivered.

I highly recommend Jo’s training and development programmes.

Happy Delegates

Bringing Humanity to Work small logo | Phoenix Training & CoachingJust some of the feedback we’ve had from happy delegates:

  • “This programme is the best I have ever been on and that is mostly down to Jo.”
  • “This programme has been a huge revelation for me, both professionally & personally, I’m actually really sad it’s ending.  I feel there is so much in the programme that would benefit me that I need to find ways to refresh it and remember it going forward.  A BIG thank you to Jo!!”
  • “I really understand the value in engaging with the people I line manage and thinking about all their differences and how they would like to be managed. It’s really made me think how small things could make a huge difference to the team and individual’s motivation & development.”
  • “Honestly the best training I’ve ever had.”
  • “I have more confidence and feel better prepared to follow best practices learned in the course in regards to objectives setting, prioritisation, running effective 121s, and coaching my direct reports.”
  • “I came to the programme with a very one dimensional view on line management – manage people to get the job done!  I now have a much better understanding of the broader issue, on the need for SMART objectives, clear goals etc and how I can help other people develop in their careers and how I can in mine too.”
  • “I have loved this training and feel really excited about putting things into practise. Not only has it made me feel as motivated as a line manager but just generally in my job.  Jo is an excellent facilitator, who guides you through everything brilliantly.  I’m going to miss it!”
  • “Really enjoyed the programme. Should be mandatory every 5 Years for all line managers to refresh!”
  • “I am now able to handle my own workload much more effectively as a result of the delegation and coaching techniques learned.”
  • “Thanks so much – so inspiring and useful.”
  • “I have noticed a significant shift in my thinking since starting this programme.  I realise I have some habits which hinder me in moving forward & Jo has given me tools to address these.”
  • “I feel a lot more confident generally as a result of the areas explored during the programme.”
  • “I can thorough recommend the work of Jo. She’s just finished a Developing Line Management Skills course for a group of managers here at Comic Relief, and we are all very impressed.”
  • “Well, I basically had zero skills to start with, and now I genuinely feel equipped with a whole load, and empowered to practice them at work.”
  • “Feel significantly more confident in my abilities and know I have the tools to help me manage the challenges that may occur as a line manager.”
  • “More confident in acting as a line manager. Feel I have a great toolkit with which to manage a variety of areas covered.  Also value the importance of strong line management higher – and the impact it has if not done well.”
  • “I’m going to feel more confident having difficult conversations & knowing what techniques to use to get the most out of my direct reports.”
  • “I have consolidated skills I felt comfortable with and also learnt new techniques for tackling different scenarios. Coaching, for example, is one area I am now trying to use more with my direct report and I can already see her gaining confidence from this approach. Many of the techniques learnt on the course I am finding useful in my general work with other colleagues or external clients. In particular, recognising people’s motivations and different preferences for styles of working. I also feel much more confident with the idea of managing more people (and more challenging ones) than my current direct report.”
  • “I think I have improved all areas of line management, in particular learning effective practices for giving feedback, delegating work and coaching that I am already using on using to manage my assistant. I have also learnt skills that I am sure I will be able to apply in other areas of my role aside from line management of direct reports, especially time management and prioritisation.”
  • ” It was a great environment for sharing experiences and advice. Would recommend it to all line managers!”
  • “I found the modules about coaching and feedback the most useful. Thinking about what I find challenging about giving feedback and trying to be less emotional about it has made it seem a lot less scary and I am trying to give to feedback a lot more.”
  • “I really thought it was excellent and can’t think of any ways to improve it”

Presenting with Impact - flexible approach

For this training, we had some specific challenges around the need to maximise our time together, and also the need to incorporate a focus on presenting remotely.

Jo was really flexible and proactive in coming up with suggestions. The training was very practical and fast paced. I could see an immediate difference in presentations given later that week, and have had really positive feedback on the influence that this training has had on the team’s confidence and planning of presentations.

Jo does much more than just presentation training too.  I would highly recommend working with Jo – a fantastic facilitator and trainer.

Jo’s training, which ran for a day, managed to meet the needs of both experienced and less experienced presenters.  She gave us useful pre-work to do and then ran a half-day session with simple, obvious ‘why don’t I do that’ guidance which enriched us all.  Importantly, she focused on both the medium and the message and got everyone away from thinking about what their PowerPoint slides might look like.  We then had time to prepare our presentations, after which Jo got us to do a real time, filmed presentation.  She led with excellent and insightful feedback, while also creating a ‘safe space’ for peers to feed back as well.  Jo, who takes evaluation of her sessions very seriously, scored ‘excellent’ among all my team.

Having been on a number of average competency-based training courses in the past, as have most people, I tend to approach these with a dose of scepticism.

The Presentation Skills training that Jo Wright delivered to our Education team a few months ago reconciled me with the very idea of team-based courses on key competencies. So much so that getting her back in to train our Health team a few months later was a no brainer !

The course is excellent value, provides the perfect combination of theory and practice, and excels at both. It is tailored to each individual’s preferences, strengths and weaknesses, and easily stretches even the most accomplished speakers and presenters.

My team loved it and everyone rated the training as excellent. Highly recommend to any team whose success depends on their capacity to get across key messages in a compelling way to a variety of stakeholders.

Presentation Skills

Bringing Humanity to Work small logo | Phoenix Training & CoachingThe purpose of the 1 day Intro course was to allow delegates to improve their presentation skills – from planning to delivery, and become confident in the process. Jo ensured the course matched the learning needs and learning styles of the group as closely as possible. Positive feedback from two of the delegates:

– “I have learned that a successful presentation has to have a clear main message and needs to be adapted according to different audiences’ needs; I felt much more confident in delivering the presentation”

– “I found the training helpful. Using the confidence boosting techniques worked for me, and Jo’s advice on keeping PowerPoint presentations as simple as possible”

As a result of the course delegates are more confident presenting to a variety of different audiences i.e. grantees, colleagues and corporate partners.

I highly recommend Phoenix Training & Coaching for in house learning solutions.
